Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari<\/b>\u00a0aka\u00a0LEF<\/b>\u00a0is a vocalist and composer from\u00a0Bologna<\/a>,\u00a0Italy<\/a>. Over the last decade he has had notable collaborations with\u00a0Bill Laswell<\/a>,\u00a0Hamid Drake<\/a>,\u00a0Nils Petter Molv\u00e6r<\/a>,\u00a0Eivind Aarset<\/a>,\u00a0Jamie Saft<\/a>,\u00a0Pat Mastelotto<\/a>,\u00a0Eraldo Bernocchi<\/a>,\u00a0Markus Stockhausen<\/a>,\u00a0Tony Wakeford<\/a>,\u00a0Trevor Dunn<\/a>,\u00a0Giovanni Lindo Ferretti<\/a>, Raiz,\u00a0Quintorigo<\/a>,\u00a0Cristina Don\u00e0<\/a>, Gianni Maroccolo, Ambrogio Sparagna, Faraualla, Simone Zanchini, Enrico Gabrielli, Mariposa,\u00a0Sigillum S<\/a>,\u00a0Ephel Duath<\/a>\u00a0and Fabrizio Puglisi.<\/p>\n

Comprised of monstrously prolific Zu bassist Massimo Pupillo, Sigillum-S founder and noted experimental guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi \u2013 whom you may also know from his Mick Harris collaborations \u2013 drummer Bal\u00e1zs P\u00e1ndi, and shapeshifting vocalist Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Obake operate in the twilight area between \u2018art\u2019 and sludge. Fornasari\u2019s contributions in particular firmly place the music herein into the bracket of \u2018art\u2019 \u2013 he soars operatically above and through the music, then plummets down into the lower registers to intone, command, insinuate, mutter, howl and screech like a thousand chattering apes. His hollow, tombstone-scraping croak is the equal of any \u2018Brutal Death Metal\u2019 grunter, and his powerful baritone like a dark twin to the similarly gifted Mike Patton. Indeed, hearing his voice across the course of Obake, one could very easily believe that he was the mutant offspring of Patton and Attila Csihar \u2013 the demonically-throated voice of Sunn, Mayhem, Void Ov Voices and Aborym \u2013 so fluid, stentorian and damned dark are his tones, and, like Patton, he doesn\u2019t merely sing \u2013 he vocalises, using his voice as an instrument for adding layers of texture. Fornasari elevates what would already be a seriously tasty musical proposition into a must-hear.<\/em><\/div>\n

That said, the music on this record is pleasingly varied and often marked by a profound sensitivity. Fornasari’s vocals, in addition to the metallic tinge, cover textures ranging from Leonard Cohen’s vaguely menacing whisper, to the darkly elegant style of Secrets of the Beehive (Virgin, 1987)-era David Sylvian, to full-blown operatic exaggeration (“Dream Made of Water”)<\/em><\/div>\n

Over the last decade, Fornasari performed in excess of two hundred events in prestigious Italian and European festivals and theatre stages among which we count the\u00a0Wave-Gotik-Treffen<\/a>[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in Leipzig with the band Owls[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0(Tony Wakeford<\/a>,\u00a0Eraldo Bernocchi<\/a>, Lef)\u00a0Asymmetry Festival<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in Poland with the band Obake,[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0with\u00a0Giovanni Lindo Ferretti<\/a>\u00a0at Teatro Vittoria in Roma, the Teatro Grande in\u00a0Brescia<\/a>, the Cappella Paolina del\u00a0Quirinale<\/a>, the Teatro di Correggio, the\u00a0Teatro Comunale Modena<\/a>, Bologna in\u00a0Piazza Santo Stefano<\/a>, the Teatro Piccolo Regio in\u00a0Torino<\/a>, with Somma[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0at the\u00a0Teatro Dal Verme<\/a>\u00a0di Milano, and singing Contemporary Opera at venues like the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, and finally the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara. In 2004 he started working together with\u00a0Eraldo Bernocchi<\/a>\u00a0with whom produced the album “Unisono”[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in collaboration with\u00a0Bill Laswell<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0During the same year, Fornasari gave birth to the “Vaga L\u2019Am” project with\u00a0Quintorigo<\/a>,\u00a0Giovanni Lindo Ferretti<\/a>, Enrico Gabrielli and Transgender. In 2007 he took part in the Somma[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0project with\u00a0Eraldo Bernocchi<\/a>,\u00a0Bill Laswell<\/a>, Raiz,\u00a0Hamid Drake<\/a>,\u00a0Nils Petter Molv\u00e6r<\/a>, Faraualla and seven Tibetan Monks. In 2008, again with Eraldo Bernocchi, he co-produced the remix album for\u00a0Ephel Duath<\/a>\u2019s “Pain Remixes the Known”.[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2009 he wrote soundtracks for “La torre riflette”, a video installation on the Due Torri in Bologna.[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the same year he produced “Costituto” with Bernocchi, Markus Stockhausen and Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, a 700 years celebration album for the Costituto of Siena.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2010 he disclosed an approach to the\u00a0bel canto<\/a>\u00a0as he made his debut in\u00a0Nino Rota<\/a>\u2019s “Il Principe Porcaro” opera at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Finally and more recently, Fornasari is a member of the trio Owls,[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0with Eraldo Bernocchi and Tony Wakeford, which played their opening concert at the\u00a0Wave-Gotik-Treffen<\/a>\u00a0in Leipzig in 2011. In 2012 he won[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0the Genova Film Festival award with his “Cose Naturali” soundtracks.[14]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Fornasari is also a member of Obake with Bernocchi,\u00a0Massimo Pupillo<\/a>\u00a0andBal\u00e1zs P\u00e1ndi<\/a>. In 2012 Lef wrote music for Saga, a\u00a0Giovanni Lindo Ferretti<\/a>‘s opera with 14 horses on stage. In 2013 he started with Lorenzo Feliciati the band Berserk!
